New business highlight: The Stampede Saloon and Eatery of Chugwater

Posted: Thursday, Mar 9th, 2017

CHUGWATER – Downtown Chugwater has welcomed a new business in 2017, with the Stampede Saloon and Eatery offering a venue for food, fun and entertainment each weekend.

The new business is owned by Merwyn “Mer” and Margie Nilson, as well as their son, Lance and his wife Lilly. The family purchased the business in 2016, and celebrated their grand opening on New Year’s Eve.

Mer said that while businesses typically wait until warmer weather to open their doors, the decision to start in the wintertime has been a good one for his family, and the business enjoys a good crowd each weekend as they feature local and area musicians.

“The community reception has been excellent,” Mer said, adding that in addition to visitors from out of state and throughout the region, the Stampede is getting regular customers from throughout Platte County.

Lance and Lilly have a history in music, performing together with “Dakota Country” for over 30 years. The couple would perform at venues throughout the western states, and would also travel to Anchorage, Alaska each year to perform during the summer months. Mer said that, while his son and daughter in-law were ready to settle down, they did want to use the ideas they had picked up during their tour years and put them to practice, ultimately settling in Chugwater, where Lilly grew up.

Lance and Lilly will still entertain on occasion at the Stampede, when Dakota Country comes to town to perform.

The Stampede is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with live music performances on Fridays and Saturdays.

This weekend, the restaurant will host Eric and Tiffany Vehrs of Cheyenne, and on Saturday, former Wheatland resident Steve Gilmore will be performing.

Mer said that ultimately, his family hopes to offer a place that promotes community, and offers a unique venue for the entire family to enjoy.
