Lady Blazers snag second, Blazers fourth at Cheyenne

CHEYENNE – The Torrington High School girls’ track team beat out several 4A schools to snag second place at the Cheyenne Invite hosted by Cheyenne Central High School on April 29.

Posting 170 team points, the Lady Blazers pulled in to second place, coming within 16 points from the first-place school, Cheyenne East at 196.

The Torrington boys’ squad placed fourth with 76 points.

Sophomore Brooklyn Asmus dominated girls’ sprinting events at the meet. Asmus kicked the day off with a first-place finish in the 100-meters, clocking in at 12.08 seconds.

Timing the 200-meters in at 24.78 seconds, Asmus garnered gold in the event.

Senior Tyler Bennick won both boys’ throwing events. Hitting a mark of 138 feet, 6 inches in the discus, Bennick advanced to the No. 1 spot in the event. In the shot put, Bennick captured gold with a toss of 57-09 ¼.

Senior Alyssa Wondercheck bagged gold in the girls’ long jump with a leap of 16-06.

Sophomore Trishell Pontarolo secured first place in the triple jump, posting a mark of 35-08 ½.

In the girls’ shot put, junior Teryn Stokes clinched gold with a toss of 34-03. Stokes finished with five inches to spare over her opponents.

Sophomore Callie Taylor cruised past the competition in the girls’ 3200-meters to win by a two-minute margin at 14 minutes, 1.52 seconds.

Taylor, freshman Esperanza Chavez, sophomore Natalie Long and junior Tiffany Krueger scooped up gold in the girls’ 4x800-meter relay, clocking in at 11:59.62.

“The kids came out and competed well on a Monday and took advantage of the weather,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “The kids did a great job powering through the wind.”

Torrington hosts the THS Wiseman Invite on Friday. The first events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Girls top three

Freshman Kaia Jacobson led the Torrington pack in the discus with a third-place finish, clearing 97-06. 

Sprinting events consisted of a trio of Lady Blazers dominating the top three spots. In the 100-meters, junior Jaycee Hurley clinched second place at 12.71 seconds with Wondercheck in third at 12.86 seconds. Hurley picked up second place in the 200-meters, posting a time of 26.93 seconds, with Pontarolo in third at 27.72 seconds.

Jumping highlights included a second-place finish by Pontarolo in the long jump at 15-06 ¼. 

Freshman Ava Mattis picked up third place in the triple jump at 30-06 ½.

Sophomore Natalie Hawes bagged hardware in both hurdling events. Hawes snapped up second place in the 300-hurdles, clocking in at 49.24 seconds, and finished third in the 100-meters at 16.84 seconds.

The 4x100-meter relay team – Asmus, Wondercheck, Hawes and Hurley – took second place, timing in at 50.15 seconds.

Boys top three

Throwing highlights consisted of a second-place finishes by senior Trey Parriott in both the discus, clearing 137-00, and the shot put at 51-05 ½.

Fellow senior Brayden Frazier snagged third place in the shot put, hitting a mark of 48-08 ½.

In jumping events, freshman Drew Kramer snapped up third place in the triple jump with a leap of 39-07. 

Sophomore Landre Greiman captured third place in the long jump, posting a mark of 18-07 ¾. 

In the 4x800-meter relay, senior Jorey Asmus, junior Tyler Nicolay, senior Zabdiel Munoz and sophomore Brady Dagen bagged second place with a time of 9:34.19.

The 4x100-meter relay team – Martinez, Kramer, sophomore Landre Greiman and freshman Ace Heron – placed third at 46.60 seconds.
