CASPER – Eighty-one pieces were submitted by Wheatland High School art students in the 56th annual Wyoming Art Symposium in Casper. Some projects included a wire sculpture scorpion, acrylic paintings, graphite drawings, a group project of a basketball court made with popsicle sticks, and a six-foot cardboard-and-paper-maché sword made by Trevin Graves.
Aunnaleiah Speiker won a blue ribbon for her ceramic dragon sculpture light. She used clay to sculpt the dragon head and clear glass domes for the eyes, explained art teacher Micah Brant. “She placed a small LED light inside to create the glow of the dragon’s eyes and created small butterflies to place around the head and nose of the dragon.”
The symposium is the largest statewide art show of any state in the nation, with around 3,000 submissions by 73 schools across Wyoming. Entries are all judged in their respective categories without regard to school size.
